Blog Post 7

well, I finished the book and the Lore that went into this reading is crazy. The book wasn’t really making sense with switching between two character but it all came together at the end of the book.

POV me reading the lore

So the plot advances and Sarah goes through some internal struggles with herself. She found that Quakerism was nice, but the racism didn’t go away in the north, definitely not in the south. So she gets rebellious and starts a abolition movement and she manages to get her sister Nina from Charleston and the both of them cause a rebellion and basically the whole nation to go after them and even stoning them. by the way, everyone aged 20 years so now Sarah is middle aged. Yikes that seems like a reference to the bible of the Jews trying to stone A prostitute.

POV: Sarah and Nina

Hetty aged 30 years and now she was coming up with a masterplan to get out of slavery. She had a child named sky and they managed to save alot of money. However, HER MOM SOMEHOW FOUND HER WAY BACK INTO HER HOUSE AFTER 13 YEARS. Plot twist of the century

Another crazy thing is that Sarah came back to Charleston after 16 years and came back despite AN ARREST TO COME BACK BECAUSE OF HER REBELLIOUS SWITCH. She came to plan escape with hetty and sky and that is where the book ends. to be honest it is a very unexpected ending but id say that it is a good book.

The overall theme seems to be finding your place and passion and ultimately staying un unity despite bad times being that Sarah, Hetty, and Sky went on a boat and went up north. (BTW thank you Mrs. Johnson for recommending this book.)

Wow. This is a handful. I picked up my book for this blog and the first page was Handful/Hetty the slave and someone else having a Sex scene. (I didn’t search a sex scene because I would probably get expelled if I did that.) WHY DID THE AUTHOR PUT THAT IN THIS BOOK. THERE IS SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS TO DESCRIBE AN EVENT OR SCENE WITHOUT SOMETHING THAT GRAPHIC. I sincerely question why I had to read that and the fact that they were making it overly sexual my talking about sensations and squeezing things. Ew.

On a better note, both Characters have grown up about 14 years and I find it interesting how the author makes that jump because well, the book wouldn’t be made or ALLOWED to be made with Hetty still being a young child and… yeah you get the point. Its interesting because with Hetty grown up, she ends up hearing about a plan with other slaves to go against the white slave owners but ultimately failed. Talk about tea. Sarah seems to be living a decent life and fully converted her faith to Quakerism.

The overall theme seems to be just them having character development and overall the book seems pretty good. I Hope that ill be able to finish this book because it is very dense with lore. in other words, its kind of hard to understand at times with southern lingo and the fact that it takes place during a different time period. Oh well ill get through it. I hope. Someone bleach my eyes because that first page was unnecessary.

Wow. There is a lot to say in this. The contents in this blog post will be crazy because the book got really deep and got relatable to a point that feels way too real. So Sarah gets an opportunity to go north because her family life was suffering so she left. She went to a castle and found the guy she met named Israel and she stayed with him to explore her Christian faith. Good for her because she could of prayed for a bunch of the things that were happening to her.

POV Sarah.

Another thing that happened was that Hetty was dealing with home life after Sarah left and its not very good. Sarah’s sister Nina was basically creating a Puritan-like-cult that was FAR from Christian doctrine and it got shut down by The slave owners wife named Missus and since Sarah left, she was abusing the slaves beyond comprehension. EVEN FOR SIMPLY ACCIDENTALLY BURNING TOAST OR BREAD. Oh. it wasn’t a very light punishment either. IT WAS SO BAD THAT THEY WOULD BE BLEEDING FOR A LONG TIME.

I Feel as If this is rather fitting for this occasion.

So far, I’m getting that the main theme so far is really just Both the main Characters developing through their struggles because I would say that they are going though character arcs right now and basically being rammed in the face with a bunch of misfortune and torment from Sarah being treated poorly from Israel’s sister, and Hetty being abused and also being the family Therapist.

Its interesting to see how the book is developing because it is using the dark themes of the time and the events of the characters to portray the mood of the book and also see how the author uses both Sarah And Hetty to fill in Plot voids for when they switch between the two. An example of this is when Sarah moves up north and tells her events. Then Hetty will fill in stuff that happened at home and now I get why there are two main characters in the book. Unrelated note, I sure hope that I wont be crunching to get work done because I am practically having a midlife crisis at age 17. Why must the School curriculum do this to me. 🙂 (Don’t you dare call 988 nor the school staff because I have a loving family thank you.)

well, the book got even more interesting. Sarah ends up getting RAILED with info and life. She got punched in the face by life and got absolutely smashed with her fathers death. like if i was in her situation I would probably be in a deep state of depression and would probably not recover very well being that i’m an empath. its not fun being me.

Being that it is halfway into my book. rating the book so far I would rate it from 0 to 100 a 72 out of 100 purely because the shifts between Hetty the presumed slave and Sarah the presumed white person in the family of the slave owners because it is causing me to think that Hetty is talking while it was stuff happening to Sarah. Or the other way around where I think Sarah is talking or being talked to but instead Hetty is going down with some diabolical stuff. I can’t help but think that this book is also starting to drag events out for too long because I’ll be engaged with the book, seeing Sarah meeting a guy after going north and finding herself with Quakerism and religion and ending up to be attracted to him and then after that, it ends up getting boring from the blabbering that the characters do.

Well, i hope the book gets better because i’m going to fall asleep reading it.

PG 113-185

Alright, the book so far has been a rollercoaster because first, Sarah ends up nearly getting molested by a guy because she was at a dance and the guy was a slave that was desperate. So Yeah, she didn’t like it.

It’s interesting because the book has been switching between Sarah’s and Hetty’s perspectives and it causes a cool shift because Sarah will be talking and then Hetty will describe her point of view or advance the plot of the story.

What I don’t so far about the story is that Either Sarah or Hetty’s mom ran away and then got arrested. Why would she do this to herself and her child? She has no one to talk to or have support from because that was her few sources to vent and lean on.

The book takes an interesting shift because both Sarah and Hetty end up finding a church and they sing and dance and learn about Jesus and God but with a plot twist of a century, a Sheriff takes them for being too loud and makes them run in a human hamster wheel and then Hetty falls off and MANGLES HER FOOT AND ANKLE UNDER THE WHEEL. Mom, I want a hug. :,(

That was the end of the church gatherings and somehow Hetty survived.

I predict that Sarah is going to continue to dig herself a grave because she feels terrible for selling hetty to her mother because she wouldn’t have gotten anything injured. With Hetty, I’m not optimistic that she is going to get better, and with Sarah, She is most likely going to fall for someone who might get too frisky with her and cause chaos.

Side note: to the people who are looking at this text, please comment on something that isn’t just full criticism. (Cough, someone I know, Cough). I don’t appreciate just criticism because it makes me feel sad and that It feels like I’m writing an essay instead of a blog. Thank you.

Blog post 2

Alright. The book is a doozy because it got interesting after my first post. It made me sit back in surprise because it got dark, Really dark, so dark that it was darker than the night sky.

So the character Sarah got into some deep stuff because she was doing some work and also somehow getting away with learning how to read?????? Mind you, she is a slave and her father is letting her get books. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE AND HOW DOES THAT MAKE SENSE. Isn’t the whole point of a slave is to make them do work and make sure that that is the only thing they know????? Not only that, SHE WRITES IN THE GROUND AFTER A HURRICANE AND GETS CAUGHT. The reason why she did this makes no sense because if I were her, I WOULD NOT BE WRITING IN THE FREAKING GROUND. I wouldn’t want to get caught. Because of this, she ends up getting whipped and more chaos ensues.

The reason why she was reading books was because she wanted to be a lawyer and when she talked about this, her mother ended up saying that she had to give up her dreams. Yikes. Imagine if you wanted to be a doctor and you read all of the stuff to do it, and then you get told by your whole family that you can’t because you are a woman and you need to fulfill wife duties and be property to your future husband. I would rebel and cause anarchy if I was in that scenario.

I hope later on that Sarah ends up getting to her dreams or either that, gets thought more highly than what she is now. I also hope it lightens up a bit because my heart dropped with the losing your dreams part.

this is how i feel after reading this book. (Getting whipped)

The Invention of Wings Post 1

section 1; Page 1-43

As I said in the previous post, I’m kind of a slow reader but hey, I finished my section for today the same day I’m writing this!

I was introduced by a character named Hetty and I learned that she was owned by a character named Sarah who is also a slave… What’s interesting to me is why would it make sense for a slave to own someone else?!? It’s kind of like having your pet owning a cat. it just doesn’t make sense. The book seems to switch viewpoints between Hetty and Sarah as characters in the chapters.

So far I don’t like Sarah because she refused to enjoy a birthday party and when she got a gift, she felt guilty for a reason that is unknown and peed all over herself and the room that she was in. If I was in her situation and a girl, I would at least be thankful for a birthday party and take the gift so that I don’t embarrass myself. but that’s just me though.

The plot so far is kinda funny because it focuses on the drama on Hetty and mainly Sarah and so far it’s listing basic stuff of the time period such as twisting bible verses in the church to justify slavery even though that was not the main point of the passage in Ephesians.

This book is interesting because I feel like the book focuses more on the drama than the historical fiction part of the book. But then again, it is really early in the book and I shouldn’t judge the book because I have about 360 pages in total. oh well, I think I’ll grow to like the book. I’ll let you know when the book gets better because I sure hope it does and I’ll be sad if the book doesn’t cuz then I can’t enjoy this book and therefore, I can’t eat ice cream while reading 🙁 its sad to be me.

POV: Sarah and the Birthday Party

Book blog pre “thought” post 0.5 on why I want to read The Inventions of wings

I’m going to be reading/finishing The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. the book cover seems interesting and I chose it because it has a historical fiction aspect and that sold me to read it because I read This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger and I got into historical fiction so that sold me. However, I’m not that good at reading over the weekends because I want to think about ANYTHING BUT school so there’s that and I’m a slow reader and I feel as if I can’t read fast enough when others are reading 20 pages ahead of me. :/ But overall I think the book will be good because it is still focused on historical fiction, but it will be another fresh page for my brain to get a different story than white people and some natives leaving a crazy/phyco school with a principle that wants everyone dead and to deprive themselves from reality. It will be good. now I won’t feel like being depressed after reading a couple chapters. I will most likely though because of the story of the book. Yay. :.D I might end up looking at a bunch of cats and dogs and old disney movies just so that I don’t get sad, afterall, depression isn’t that fun. Typically isn’t. But then again, thats where my mom and dad and friends come in. I’m good about staying on track because i’m built different. Lets see how it goes.

Despite the angelic wings, the premises of the book are anything BUT angelic.

Do you think any of these (de las Casas’, Columbus’, Red Cloud’s) accounts changed the audience? How? Why yes or no? If no, what could they have done to more affect their audience?

It changed the audience because, at the time, Spanish people were most likely unaware of the torturing of the Natives and the poor people definitely didn’t know that these Spaniards were treating these individuals like animals or beyond human. These atrocities caused De Las Casas who benefited from this slavery to turn against this very slavery.

Cultural encounters and frontiers

De Las Casas demonstrates that these natives are not being treated as they are supposed to be because Casas Argues that the Spaniards have gotten greedy and strayed from the goal of spreading love- but instead being brutally tortured for the Spaniard’s personal gain. (pages 90-91). The natives are being forced to dive under the sea for pearls to sell (page 91) and to be thrown off a ship if they die or get sick. ( page 91). Casas gives a mood of a dystopian society happening with the natives and the Spaniards with the natives being taken advantage of by the Spaniards and the judges calling these acts of slavery justifiable as being a prophet and divine. (Page 91) The audience that Casas wants is the common people of Spain because the richer class of Spain would not care about the people but the money.
